In July 2025, the massive reconstruction of the I‑35 / I‑80 and Hickman Road interchange in Clive is in full swing. This essential corridor is receiving a complete upgrade, including a state-of-the-art diverging diamond interchange (DDI), new ramps, pedestrian infrastructure, and stormwater controls.
Project Overview
Led by the Iowa Department of Transportation in coordination with Clive and Urbandale, this $94 million project replaces the aging interchange design with a modern DDI that enhances traffic flow and safety. Once complete, the interchange will support growing traffic demands, which are expected to rise by roughly 35 percent by 2042.
Current Progress (Aerial Highlights)
Grading and reconfiguration of the interstate alignment near Hickman Road
Structural foundation work for the diverging diamond crossings and ramps
Closure-based upgrades on southbound ramps at Hickman Road and University Ave, running April through mid‑August
Construction on pedestrian bridges and an underpass tunnel to safely carry trail users under the interstate and connect to the Clive Greenbelt Trail system
Accessibility & Amenities Being Built
A dual-bridge trail system over ramps, plus an underpass tunnel, will provide a continuous multi-modal route from Lifetime Fitness across the interstate to the Clive Greenbelt Trail—raising pedestrian and cyclist safety while fostering connectivity between communities.
What’s Ahead
Continued ramp and bridge construction throughout summer
Interstate full and staged closure windows at night as crews work on mainline lanes and structures
Trail reconstruction and stormwater infrastructure, including swales, gabions, and bioretention areas, to manage runoff into Walnut Creek
We’ll continue offering regular aerial coverage of construction milestones, future bridge installations, road reopenings, and updates on pedestrian access.
